Nowadays most surfboards are made of styrofoam, because it is a cheap, easy to cut and above all a light material. But when it ends up in the ocean it will stay there for a very long time. Observing the ocean, we recognize fast the fact that a lot of waste accumulates in the ocean. We find more microplastic in the sea than plankton.
The aim of the project is to create a light wooden surfboard which does not harm the environment. Therefore we have developed a tool to make the traditional surfboard production more interesting again and to support the process of building an own surfboard.
The tool we designed is a wooden skeleton inside the board that allows it to be light but stable at the same time.
»Plastic waste, mostly from rivers or careless dumping on land, washes into theoceans at an average rate of about nine milliontons a year. But sunlight, wind and waveseventually break down ocean plastic to bitsthat are barely visible.«
»But let’s face it, fiberglass, epoxy resin and styrofoam are a dirty business. It’s hazardous to your health, allergenic and ultimately hazardous waste. Actually, there’s every reason not to use it. Especially with a nature-based passion like surfing.«
»Microplastic currents – Microplastics are small plastic particles with a diameter of less then 5mm, which pollute the environment. They get concentrated by circulating water in what is known as gyres. The earth has five major gyres.«
